The 12 Chinese Animals
0How many times have you gone to a Chinese restaurant and figured out what animal from the Chinese zodiac represented you? You also probably read the description of those of that animal’s characteristics and nodded in agreement or shook your head thinking, “that’s not me.” But have you ever wanted to know more about the Chinese zodiac and the twelve animals? Have you ever wondered how these twelve animals came to represent different years? Well, wonder no longer. “The 12 Chinese Animals: Create Harmony In Your Daily Life Through Ancient Chinese Wisdom” by Master Zhongxian Wu presents what can be a complex Eastern topic in a very easy to understand and accessible manner for the Western reader.
The first part of the book explains the wisdom behind the twelve animals. The numerological meanings are explained, and a short primer on Chinese zodiac or Chinese astrology is presented in a few pages. There are also short explanations of the eight trigrams, twelve tidal hexagrams, and the cycle of nature. This obviously isn’t as in depth as you could go, but for most people, these simple explanations will suffice to gain a better understanding. (more…)
Things to Know Before Travelling to China
0Will you soon be off on a holiday or travelling to China? Then read on, because there are many, many hazards to travelling in China, and knowing these things can help your trip become a success rather than an unmitigated disaster. China can be one of the hardest countries for Westerners to travel in. It’s vast with a huge population, the spoken and written language are incomprehensible to most (and change frequently as you move provinces), the food is utterly baffling, and the cultural differences are enormous. I don’t claim to be an expert on the subject (I lived for a year in China and travelled substantially in the country) but I can provide the basics for surviving China.
Firstly the language. If you don’t speak any Chinese at all, try and and learn a few words of basic Mandarin before you go. This could be a life saver. Beijing Mandarin is gradually being promoted as the national language, and even in provinces such as Guangdong where Cantonese is spoken, you’ll still be able to get by with some Mandarin. The major difficulty with Mandarin is that as well as not being able to speak or understand it, you won’t be able to read it either. So, remember you won’t be able to read street signs, or shop signs or even read a map to know where you are. You’ll often find the best way to get anywhere independently is by enlisting a Chinese helper to write down the place name for you in Mandarin, which you can then show to the taxi driver. Don’t expect them to understand if all you can do is yell the place name at them. Believe me, they won’t. And remarkably there are no words in Mandarin for ‘yes’ or ‘no’. It’s too complicated to go into here, but the way I sidestepped this difficulty was by learning the word for correct (dui) and not correct (bu dui). Much easier. (more…)
Is Chinese Food Healthy
0When eaten in China, there’s no doubt that Chinese food is healthy. The Chinese focus on vegetables or tofu and use only a very small amount of meat. Unfortunately, the Westernised versions of Chinese food are often very oily, salty and contain huge amounts of monosodium glutamate, to which many people are allergic.
However, it is certainly possible to cook healthy Chinese food at home because you are completely in control of the ingredients. In fact, with careful choices even a meal eaten in a Chinese restaurant or taken home can be healthy.
In general, steamed, poached, grilled, barbequed, roasted or stir fried are good and deep fried, battered and breaded are bad. Here are some examples of how to choose a healthy Chinese meal.
If your local Chinese restaurant offers prawn crackers on arrival, don’t eat them. Better still ask for them to be taken away so that you won’t be tempted because these will have been deep fried. (more…)
